On the 10th of November 2024, the Llanelli community united in a poignant display of respect and remembrance for Remembrance Sunday, as large crowds filled Murray Street and Church Street.

The air was imbued with a sense of solemn pride as officials, cadets, and the esteemed Royal British Legion Band marched in a dignified procession towards the Cenotaph nestled within the Town Hall gardens.

Remembrance Sunday serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during times of conflict, underscoring the importance of peace and community solidarity.

In Llanelli, where a rich history of military involvement exists, the event also encourages deeper engagement among younger generations, ensuring that the stories and lessons of bravery continue to resonate and inspire.

The gathering culminated in a heartfelt service of reflection, where wreaths were laid and minute of silence was observed, reinforcing Llanelli’s unwavering commitment to honouring those who served, thereby weaving the threads of history into the very fabric of the present.

Dignitaries including Dame Nia Griffith MP and Lee Waters MS joined hundreds of people who braved the November chill to pay their respects at Llanelli Town Hall.

Members of the armed forces, along with representatives from various community organisations, solemnly gathered to pay their respects by laying wreaths at the revered war memorial. Among them was Hywel Haughton Jones, a distinguished former pupil of Llanelli Grammar School for Boys and a respected committee member.

He had the honour of placing a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of the Llanelli Grammar School Old Boys Association, a poignant tribute to the more than 100 former students, two dedicated teachers and seven airmen who valiantly fought but tragically lost their lives during both World Wars. Established in 1896, Llanelli Grammar School for Boys has a rich history of academic excellence and community involvement, nurturing generations of students who have gone on to make significant contributions both locally and globally.
