Graig School Summer Magazine – The ‘Jester ‘
The 22 pages of the Jester includes many items of interest. Also included are details of the retirement of Mr. J V Hayes, and Mr. Ellis W Griffiths, two well respected Masters who have given many years of excellent service to the School, and the appointed of the new Deputy Headmaster Sam Alford ( Maths.)
Mr. Hayes was head of the Middle School and one of the Deputy Headmasters. He graduated with Honours in Classics from Aberystwyth University and after a serving in the RAF during the War, taught Classics in Milford Grammar School until his appointment in 1958 to teach Classics at Llanelli Boys’ Grammar Technical School and naturally continued his teaching with the School’s transition to the Graig Comprehensive School in1977. Mr. Hayes set himself high standards and expected the same from others, and made every effort in furthering the interest of his pupils.
Mr. William Samuel Alford ( Mathematics ) , who joined the staff in 1958, was appointed Deputy Headmaster – commencing September 1991 – in place of Mr. Hayes .
Ellis Griffiths was a former pupil of the Llanelli Boys’ Grammar School – in ”Yr Ysgol ar y Bryn” , from where he proceeded to Cardiff University graduating in Mathematics. After teaching for 14 years at Penarth Grammar School he joined the staff of Llanelli Boys’ Grammar Technical School in 1966, remaining on the staff during the transition to Graig Comprehensive in 1977, until his retirement now in 1981. Mr. Griffiths was always conscientious, patient, persevering, taught with enthusiasm and always had the interest of his pupils at heart. Amongst other activities he was an excellent Rugby Referee, good cricketer, ”School Bank” Manager, W.J.E.C. Examiner and Vice-president of the Old Boys’ Union Committee. The School wishes him a long and happy retirement
